Allergy testing to confirm the cause of a skin rash

If you find yourself with an itchy skin rash you may suspect that it is due to an allergic reaction to something you have come into contact with.

Close examination of the rash in conjunction with allergy testing can help to identify the actual cause of the rash.

There are a number of skin diseases that can be contracted that may look as though they are caused by an allergic reaction but are due to something completely different.

You should let your GP have a look at the rash and if necessary he may suggest that you undergo allergy testing so that the real cause can be identified and you can start any treatment that you may need.

It can happen that in some cases a skin rash may appear and be the result of an allergic reaction but the GP does not consider it to be due to an allergy if the patient has no previous history of allergies.

Allergy testing in this case can confirm or rule out the presence of an allergy.

Some skin rashes are obviously the result of exposure to known allergens such as nettles and this type of rash is easily identified and a cream can be used to treat the itching and prevent the rash from spreading any further.

Other causes of skin rashes are more difficult to identify and therefore allergy testing may be needed to make a correct diagnosis.

If you do develop a skin rash it may not be because of an allergic reaction so it is important to try not to scratch the itch because scratching could lead to the rash spreading and also you could cause the rash to bleed.

Once the skin is broken it could allow bacteria into the rash and then into the blood stream which could lead to an infection.

With an allergic reaction the severity of the skin rash can vary tremendously. It can be anything from a simple and annoying itch to a severe case of hives that can be extremely debilitating and unpleasant.

There are some allergies in which a skin rash is present but not thought to be due to an allergy so the cause of the rash ends up being misdiagnosed.

When it causes a misdiagnosis of allergies, skin rash can allow the real cause to get worse, causing a hypersensitive reaction to exacerbate into severe medical problems.

An allergic reaction occurs because the immune system thinks that an object entering the body is an enemy and produces chemicals such as histamine to attack the enemy.

This sets into motion a number of different symptoms of allergies a skin rash is just one of the most common.

If you also suffer from a runny nose and watering eyes or difficulty in breathing it may become apparent the rash is not the result of a simple skin rash but an allergic reaction that requires a completely different treatment.

There are many natural and synthetic products that can cause a skin rash an allergic reaction is an indication that something is not quite right.

Usually, the first reaction you might have to something that you are allergic to will be mild.

However, there are some people that suffer an anaphylactic shock the first time their body reacts to a substance.
