MORE ABOUT HAEMORRHOIDS (PILES) Heamorrhoids are swollen veins that can be found internally, on the lower part of the rectum, or externally, under the skin around the back passage. The veins become swollen because the flow of blood through them is either obstructed or slows down. The likelihood of developing haemorrhoids will increase with age, during pregnancy, poor diet (low in fibre), being overweight, suffering from constipation or diarrhoea, straining when going to the toilet or a family history of piles. SYMPTOMS OF HAEMORRHOIDS - Itchiness around the back passage; - A lump in the back passage that feels as though the bowel still needs to be emptied; - Fresh bleeding from the back passage. DIAGNOSIS OF HAEMORROIDS They are usually diagnosed by a simple examination of the rectum. |
