Prostate cancer is a group of cancerous cells that usually begins in the outer part of the prostate. Around 30,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. Of all the men who are diagnosed with cancer each year, more than 25% have prostate cancer.
To test for prostate cancer a sample of blood is taken to check for PSA (prostate-specific antigen), a small amount of which is normally found in the blood. Men with cancer of the prostate tend to have more PSA in their blood. It is now possible to carry out a prostate screening test at home to check for PSA levels, supplied by SelfDiagnosis.
